NEW YORK — Eight NYC bakeries are teaming up for the first-ever NYC Bakery Run, created by Tipster, a Danish food and beverage guide.
“New York City is falling in love with bakeries, and a new generation of bakers is redefining the city’s baking culture,” said Simon Evers, founder of Tipster. “The NYC Bakery Run celebrates their craft and pairs it with running, another quintessential daily ritual for many New Yorkers, and the interest is overwhelming.”
Inspired by Tipster’s Fastelavn Bun Run in Copenhagen earlier this year, the Sept. 21 event will put pastries from the Big Apple’s top bakers in the hands of 100 lottery-selected participants. Tipster reported more than 5,000 runners have entered for a chance to participate in the event.
Throughout the 13.1-mile route, runners will get their hands on baked goods from several NYC bakery establishments. The race will begin at La Cabra and continue through Radio Bakery, La Bicyclette, Librae Bakery, Raf’s, Gem Home and Elbow Bread, with the finish line set at L’Appartement 4F.
“Our bakery is founded on Scandinavian traditions and bringing that craft to New York has been an incredible journey for La Cabra,” said Esben Piper, founder of La Cabra. “The NYC Bakery Run is a way to share that heritage with a wider community.”
Customers interested in the race can enter through Sept. 10 at 11:59 p.m. ET. Tipster will notify the selected runners on Sept. 12.
“This isn’t your typical race,” said Gautier Coiffard, co-owner of L’Appartement 4F. “No medals, just laminated dough. We’re proud to be one of the bakeries fueling NYC’s most buttery half-marathon.”
Participating in out-of-the-box events like this offers bakeries a chance to showcase their craft in a unique format, opening the door for prospective customers. For instance, Librae Bakery partnered with streaming network Max for a pop-up that transformed its brick-and-mortar space into the fictional bakery from And Just Like That.
“For us, baking is about sharing our craft with as many people as possible,” said Kelly Mencin, founder of Radio Bakery. “A great pastry isn’t just about taste; it’s about the experience it creates. The NYC Bakery Run is a beautiful way to bring that joy onto the streets of New York, celebrating craft, community and the city we love.”
