PROVIDENCE, RI — Making the choice to open a bakery and everything that comes with it can be a daunting process for budding entrepreneurs. To help those interested in undertaking this venture, the Bread Bakers Guild of America (BBGA), in partnership with Cybake, is presenting the “Building Your Bakery: From Vision to Viable Business” series.

The webinar series spans six weeks and kicks off on May 26. Each two-hour Zoom session features insights from experienced bakers and industry professionals regarding strategies, insights and tools needed to launch a bakery. Instructors include Nancie Breunig of Companion Bakery, Wai Chu from the BBGA and Amy Emberling of Zingerman’s Bakehouse.

Sessions will feature practical instruction, group discussions and Q&A. The webinar is broken into the following installments:

  • Session 1: Bakery Foundations & Business Models
  • Session 2: Planning, Pricing & Financial Basics
  • Session 3: Legal Requirements & Compliance
  • Session 4: Designing the Bakery Operation
  • Session 5: Staffing, Training & Daily Management
  • Session 6: Marketing, Growth & Long-Term Sustainability

Throughout this process, participants will learn the ins and outs of operating a bakery; how to price products, manage costs and maintain positive cash flow; understand the legal and financial aspects of running this kind of business; and much more.

While the program is designed specifically for early-stage bakery owners, the BBGA site states that anyone interested in improving their retail and wholesale baking operations is welcome to participate.

For Guild members, the webinar pricing is $270 for the series, or $50 per session, whereas for non-members it is $325 total or $60 per session.
