CHICAGO — Fall is officially here, and several bakeries featured on Underground Donut Tours are offering pumpkin-inspired menu items.
Pumpkin is undeniable this time of year, but in bakeries, it takes the form of baked goods vs. lattes. At Stan’s Donuts in Chicago, the flavor is transforming the Old-Fashioned donut in both full and mini sizes. Blue Star Donuts in Portland, OR, is taking a similar approach with its Pumpkin Spice Pecan Old Fashioned.
Other bakeries are drawing inspiration from classic desserts that feature pumpkin, such as Breka Bakery in Vancouver with its Pumpkin Pie Donuts and Nashville’s Parlor Doughnuts with its Pumpkin Chai Cheesecake donut.
Other warm spices and fall flavors are finding their way onto bakery menus. Apple flavors are popping up in many ways, such as in an Apple Pie donut at parlor, as an Apple Compote Crumble at Doughnut Plant in Brooklyn, NY, and as Classic Apple Cider Donuts at Boston’s Red Apple Farms.
Beyond the apple orchard and the pumpkin patch, other popular flavors highlighted by the Underground Donut Tour include pecan, caramel, maple and cinnamon.
