CHARLESTON, SC — Mercantile and Mash, a gourmet food emporium that is part of the Indigo Road Hospitality Group, recently welcomed Christa Smith to its team as executive pastry chef for its in-house bakery and breads program.

In this role, Smith provides desserts and pastries for Indigo Road Charleston restaurants in addition to daily baked goods and whole cakes for Mercantile. Over time, she also hoped to grow the in-house programs and produce more unique desserts.

She also oversees the emporium’s new custom cakes programs, which launched in April and features seven signature flavors created by Smith.

“I wanted there to be an option for everyone, whether they are looking for a classic combo or something a little more fun,” Smith said of the flavor offerings. “Now that we have the flavor combinations and designs set, I can really watch my team flourish and take this project on. We are all so excited to be offering some really delicious cakes to the wonderful people of Charleston.”

When she’s not creating desserts and pastries, Smith mentors younger pastry chefs and tests new recipes and ideas for seasonal menus, events and tastings.

“I hope to continue to grow our in-house programs at Mercantile & Mash, along with being able to produce more unique and interesting desserts as time progresses with the sister restaurants,” Smith said.

Moving forward, Smith and her team are working to provide in-house bread for the kitchen and retail areas this year.
