LOS ANGELES — Raul Porto Sr., co-founder of Porto’s Bakery, passed away on May 22. He was 92 years old.

Raul Sr. co-founded the Southern California bakery with his late wife, Rosa, selling cakes and Cuban pastries. Porto’s first 300-square-foot storefront opened in 1976, with Raul Sr. helping out when he wasn’t working at another bakery.

“Through their hard work, humility, and dedication, they transformed a small family endeavor into a cherished community treasure,” the company said in a statement on Instagram. “Known for his humble nature, Raul Sr. balanced his roles as a devoted husband, father, and businessman, inspiring all who knew him with his passion and commitment.”

After a few years, he was able to join the business. With Rosa, the family-owned operation grew from its initial location in Echo Park, CA, to six brick-and-mortar shops, with a seventh set to open in the Downtown Disney District.

The pair retired from the business several years ago, and their children and grandchildren carry on the bakery’s tradition.

Raul Sr. is survived by his children — Beatriz, Raul Jr., Margarita — and grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
