Common Grain Alliance, Craft Millers Guild host webinar series

WASHINGTON, DC — In keeping with the mission to connect and support all facets of the baking industry, the Common Grain Alliance and Craft Millers Guild are teaming up to host a three-part webinar series designed for small businesses.

The first session, “Introduction to Grains Testing for the Farmer, Processor, and Maker,” will be held Sept. 10 from 6 – 7:30 p.m. EST.

The three guest speakers include Gabriel Key, member of the Craft Millers Guild and Common Grain Alliance; Aimee Hill, cereal and grains specialist for the Hartwick College Center for Food and Beverage; and Kathryn Phelan, baker in residence at the Hartwick College Center for Craft Food and Beverage.

The session’s key insights will include the importance of grain testing for food safety and marketing, strategies and approaches for reliable testing tailored to business needs, and understanding the different types of tests across the grain value chain.

The second session, “Strategies and Approaches for Successfully Incorporating Local Grains into Your Business,” will be held Oct. 7 from 6 – 7:30 p.m. EST.

Session attendees will learn how to approach adopting local grains, blending local flour with national brands for enhanced flavor and nutrition, balancing accessibility and price and making bread more accessible to consumers.

The speakers for this session will be Martin Philip, head baker at King Arthur Flour; Chris Girardot, baker and owner of RavenHook Bakehouse in Washington, DC; and June Russell, director of regional food programs for the Glynwood Center for Regional Food and Farming.

The third and final session, “Using Storytelling and Marketing to Make Your Product More Valuable and Approachable,” will be held Nov. 4 from 6 – 7:30 p.m. EST.

Michelle Ajamian, member of the Craft Millers Guild; Daniel James, creative director and founder of Herd Ventures; and Janie’s Mill will be the final guest speakers of the webinar series, sharing the importance of telling a story when highlighting local grains. The speakers will also provide crucial knowledge regarding the five photos every business should have and how to take advantage of social media in a timely manner.
